How many years have you been in the Medicaid industry?
I’ve been deeply engaged in the Medicaid industry for over 25 years, bringing decades of experience in navigating its complexities, driving innovation, and championing equitable access to care. My journey has been rooted in a commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable populations and shaping systems that support sustainable, person-centered healthcare.
What is your focus/passion? (Industry related or not)
My focus and passion lie in cultivating joy – both in my own life and in the lives of others. Professionally, this translates into a deep commitment to advancing equitable healthcare access, improving health outcomes, and driving meaningful social impact.
Personally, I prioritize life/work balance, cherishing time with family and friends, and creating lasting memories—always with a healthy dose of laughter. I proudly consider myself a self-proclaimed happiness influencer, striving to lead by example and inspire others to find fulfillment in both their personal and professional journeys.
What is the top item on your “bucket list?”
At the top of my bucket list is a journey to Africa—to immerse myself in its rich cultures, connect with its people, and experience the awe-inspiring beauty of a safari adventure. I’m drawn to the continent’s vibrant traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and the opportunity to witness wildlife in its natural habitat. It’s a dream that blends exploration, learning, and deep appreciation for the diversity of life.
What do you enjoy doing most with your personal time?
I often say that the most valuable currency in life is laughter and memories. In my personal time, I love traveling, playing games, and making music with my family—whether it’s through karaoke, drumming, or jamming on various instruments. These moments bring joy, connection, and a sense of rhythm to life, and I cherish every one of them.
Who is your favorite historical figure and why?
Maya Angelou is my favorite historical figure because of her unwavering strength, wisdom, and grace. Her words have inspired generations, and her life story, marked by resilience, creativity, and advocacy, continues to empower me. She used her voice to uplift others, challenge injustice, and celebrate the beauty of identity and culture. Her legacy reminds me that courage and compassion can truly change the world.
What is your favorite junk food?
Without a doubt—French fries are my ultimate guilty pleasure. They’re truly my weakness! I love how versatile they are, with endless ways to prepare and season them, each reflecting unique flavors from different cultures and cuisines. Whether crispy, curly, spiced, or smothered in toppings—I adore them all.
Of what accomplishment are you most proud?
Without question, my greatest accomplishment is being a mom. Every professional skill I’ve developed, combined with my upbringing and life experiences, has prepared me for this most meaningful role. I’m the proud mother of two incredible daughters—now in their tween and teenage years—who embody kindness, respect, intelligence, generosity, independence, courage, and boldness. They inspire me daily and watching them grow into remarkable young women is the most rewarding journey of my life.
For what one thing do you wish you could get a mulligan?
Honestly, I gave this a lot of thought—and I wouldn’t ask for a mulligan. While there are moments I’ve reflected on and choices I’ve considered revisiting in theory, I’m genuinely at peace with the life I’ve built. Every challenge, adversity, and triumph has shaped who I am today. I believe our experiences—both the highs and the lows—are purposeful and essential to our growth. I have no regrets, only gratitude for the lessons learned and the silver linings discovered along the way. I trust that my journey is unfolding exactly as it’s meant to, with each step ordered just for me.
What are the top 1-3 issues that you think will be important in Medicaid during the next 6 months?
- Federal Funding Cuts & Risks to Medicaid Expansion: Federal funding reductions pose a serious threat to Medicaid expansion efforts. These cuts could lead to decreased eligibility, reduced benefits, and lower provider reimbursement rates. States may be forced to fill financial gaps through tax increases or cuts to other essential services and infrastructure. The ripple effects could be profound, especially in economically constrained states and underserved geographies. Navigating this challenge will require resilience, vigorous advocacy, and innovative solutions to protect vulnerable populations.
- Public Health Risks from Reduced Access to Care: Limited access to care can exacerbate preventable illnesses, mental health crises, and emergency room overuse. Funding instability may undermine critical public health initiatives, including efforts to address social determinants of health, combat substance use disorders, improve maternal health outcomes, and control infectious diseases. A proactive, community-centered approach will be essential to mitigate these risks.
- Data Interoperability & Integrated Care Coordination: Advancing technology platforms that support interoperability is vital. Systems must enable seamless data sharing among beneficiaries, caregivers, and providers across medical, behavioral health, long-term care, and community-based services. Ensuring that individuals receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place depends on breaking down data silos and fostering real-time collaboration across the care continuum.
